Sew Good for the Soul:

This is my first blog post. Ever. I don’t have my own blog but have often thought of starting one simply as a place to put all my scattered random thoughts and the crazy things my kids do. But then I get too scattered and forget. Oh, the irony. So when Suzanne asked if anybody wanted to do a guest post on the Winter Wear Designs blog I jumped at the chance.
I was lucky enough to be a tester for the Amuse Boho pattern when it went to One Thimble. I made two versions of it. One super bright beachy cover-up that was perfect for my trip to Cuba; and one blousy tunic length that quickly became a wear to work staple. I LOVE the versatility of the pattern.

So when it came time to make another one for the tour I knew I wanted to try it with knit. I love knit. This is some kind of poly blend from Wal-Mart and I have to say I’m quite pleased with it. I’m Canadian so when I go to the U.S. I go a little bit crazy on the gloriously affordable fabrics at Wal-Mart. I can’t help it.

I love the way it turned out. I used the quick binding method outlined in the instructions and cut at the above the knee dress length. I wore it to work and got so many compliments. It even made me feel happy while marking essays!

I’m sure that I’m in the same position as many of you. I have two young kids, a full time job, and various other commitments and things that take up my life. I’m luckily getting into that stage where often my kids can play together or occupy themselves while I put patterns together so I can sew them up once they are in bed. I love sitting at the kitchen table with them as they colour and show me their creations, and I show them mine.

I started sewing just over two years ago at the end of my maternity leave with my daughter (my second child). My husband had to teach me how to thread the Kenmore he remembers buying with his mother when he was 13. My Mother-in-Law passed away shortly after we got married so using her machine is a special experience for me. Now sewing is my zen. When I felt like I was losing myself to motherhood it gave me purpose. As I learned to make more complicated and interesting things I gained confidence. I regained myself. I learned that it’s important to take the time to do the things that make me happy. For me. So now I do them.
I eat chocolate.

I drink scotch.

And I sew. For my soul.
